  • Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt

    Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt
At this stage, children show independence and develop an understanding of the quality of their self-confidence in their decisions. If a caregiver supports their decisions this gives them confidence (autonomy). Otherwise, it creates a sense of shame and doubt. Since Nicc's mother worked lots and was busy very often in their home life, Nicc learned himself that cauliflower was his favorite vegetable and his mother was pleased there was no decisions to make about what vegetables he should eat!
  • Identity vs Confusion

    Identity vs Confusion
At this stage, young adults develop their sense of goals, values, and identity. Nicc was in his final year of college but deferred his final year for an internship abroad in Japan. He knew who he wanted to be and valued travel and the expansion of his mind with other cultural experiences (identity). This experience eventually led him to decide on a career in human resources so that he could respect and create safe communities around different cultural identities, etc.
  • Intimacy vs Isolation

    Intimacy vs Isolation
This stage of development is about personal relationships, intimate relationships, and friends. This step is determined by previous stages if one is able to have close relationships with others. Lack of self-understanding and confidence leads to isolation, where knowing oneself from previous life stages can allow for one to gain relationships of intimacy. Nicc was 40 now. It was this day, that he proposed to his soon-to-be ex-cowoker and future spouse Janice (intimacy).
