practiced intensely for hours, everyday
was verbally and physically abused by Father
which lead to perfectionism In stage 4, children begin to develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments and their abilities. Their ability to perform complex tasks develops. The child will begin to doubt themselves if they are not provided with encouragement. "Success leads to competence while failure leads to feelings of inferiority." -
Identity vs Confusion 12-18
Due to his father's abuse, Michael became anxious, lonely, and self conscious in his adult years. He still felt like an outsider despite his success. In stage 5 children begin to question who they are and who they want to be. Children will either become positively sure of themselves and assume their own identity or parents will try to force them to be a certain way and or they will suffer an identity crisis, clouding their future vision. -
Identity vs Confusion 12-18
Michael did have close relationships which did not last, probably due to his childhood issues. He longed for relationships and was always seen with many famous people but expressed he did not have close friends.
In stage 6, people are beginning to form intimate relationships with people or isolate themselves. Erikson believed it was crucial that people developed close committed relationships with others. -
Generativity vs Stagnation 40-65
In life stage 7, you want to give and share with others
Adults strive to create/nurture things that will outlast them by having children or contributing changes that benefit other people.
Generativity-making your mark on the world
Stagnation- not finding a way to contribute or be productive and not being involved in the world. Michael Jackson more than completed this phase by constantly raising awareness and giving back to children. Although his own life was stagnant. -
Integrity vs Despair 65+
This is stage 8 of the Erikson timeline where People reflect back on their life and come away with either a sense of fulfillment from a well lived life or sense of regret and despair. Those who are unsuccessful in this phase feel that their life has been wasted and feel regrets. Successfully completing this phase means having with few regrets and a feeling satisfaction. Unfortunately, Michael Jackson died in 2009 at the age of 50 due to cardiac arrest.
