Erickson Psychology Theory Timeline

  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

(Age 36) A period where relationships with others are sought out to form a committed relationship (intimacy). Isolation would result from the lack of strong relationships formed and would also lead to loneliness. Cheng and Jenny get married, have a child and move to Alaska.
  • Identity vs. Identity Confusion

(Age 16) I was in high school joining different clubs and extracurricular trying to figure out what I would enjoy spending time doing. I did sports like basketball and volleyball while doing clubs like honors society, key club and working a part time job. This was a period of time that Erickson associates with the stage of identity vs identity confusion where teenagers experiment with different social roles to establish their own personal self and determine their own identity.
  • Generativity vs. Stagnation

(Age 50) My parents work really hard and dedicate their time to my sister and I's education so that we would eventually finish college and be okay without their direct support. Generativity is comprised of taking action to benefit others and contribute to the future. Stagnation is focusing on their interest disregarding the needs of others.
