Invention of the Cotton Gin
source After the Revolutionary War, the south faced economic problems. The soil used to grow tobacco was exhausted, and this resulted in less money, and therefor cheaper slaves. Then in 1793, a man named Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. This machine removed the seeds, and could be hand powered. -

The underground railroad was a network that helped slaves escape. It included houses known as safe houses, where slaves could go to to help them escape. It eventually helped free between 40,000-100,000 slaves. source -
Dred Scott Case decision
sourceA man named Dred was temporarily living in Wisconsin with his owner. Wisconsin was supposed to be a no slavery state. When he returned back to his state, Missuri, he sued that he should be a free man since he lived in Wisconsin. He was told that he was not a citizen, so he could not sue. This made the Northerners furious. -

Bus Boycott
source a women named Rosa Parks was riding a bus when the bus driver told her to give up her seat to a white man. She refused, and got arrested. This started the boycott of the bus company. King got arrested for starting the boycott, but it still lasted for over a year. Since this was leading bus companies to bankruptcy, The supreme court declared the segregated busses unconstitutional. -
African American students are escorted to desegregate a school in Little Rock, Arkansas
