National Park Service is created
Congress establishes the first National Park Service. It is the first National Park Service in the United States, and it contains 400 parks with a total of 84.6 billion acres of land in the US. -
New York v. New Jersey and Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners:
New York sued New Jersey commissioners to prevent the sewage dumping in the New York harbor. Dumping continued because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey, but people realized that pollution is harmful and that it should be stopped. -
Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act
Congress passed the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act to control the Dust Bowl effects such as erosion, storms, and land use. The Dust Bowl is a very eroded area, so protecting it is important. More than 2.5 million Dust Bowl refugees moved away from the prairie, becoming the largest migration in American history. -
Bald Eagle Preservation Act
Efforts were made to protect and preserve the Bald Eagle. This was important because it prevented the prevented the extinction of the US National Symbol. The Bald Eagle is no longer on the endangered species list, since 2007. -
The Antarctic Treaty
The Antarctic Treaty prevented the dumping of nuclear waste into Antarctica. Antarctica has a large effect on the Earth’s weather, atmosphere, and acts a source for freshwater. 46 countries including the United States and Russia have signed the treaty. -
Clean Air Act
Congress passed the Clean Air Act. People cannot avoid breathing the air around them. This Clean Air Act regulates air pollution and emissions, to prevent harmful air around us. -

NASA released the "Blue Marble" photo. This image depicts the planet Earth’s environmental issues and vulnerability among space releasing a flow of environmental activism, and making the picture one of the most widely spread pictures ever. -

58,000 gallons of oil were spilled in the San Francisco Bay. Oil spills are deadly to the environment, and many beaches were closed because of this.
