    Rachel Carson Writes "Silent Spring"
    Carson wrote books warning people about the effect of pollution and neglect of the environment. Her books brought awareness to the environmental issues at hand. Her book, "Silent Spring", documented the impacts of the use of pesticides on the environment.
  • Santa Barbara Oil Spill

    Santa Barbara Oil Spill
    It is estimated that a near 3 million gallons of oil spilled along the Californian coastline for 11 days, causing severe damage to coastline and ocean. This kick-started the Environmental Movement. For years following this event, people cleaned the oil off of beaches and wildlife, trying to restore the coastline habitat. This event showed the danger of mass amounts of oils in waterways and the impact that it had on the environment.

    Cuyahoga River Fire
    The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland Ohio caught fire due to the amount of oil and toxins in the river. This was not the first time the river had caught fire, however, it was the first time it caught the public’s attention. The fire illustrated the threats of water pollution. Following this event, the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, was formed.

    Boeing 747 Makes It's First Flight
    The Boeing 747 made its first commercial flight from New York to London. It carried around 300 passengers and flew non - stop to London. Travel in this aircraft allowed many passengers to arrive at a destination efficiently. It reduced the number of flights needed because smaller planes were no longer in use for commercial travel.

    The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
    The Nuclear Non - Proliferation Treaty was signed and effective in March. This treaty was an international agreement that would stop the use of nuclear weapons. It stated that there would be cooperation in finding a peaceful way to use nuclear energy. This treaty did not allow nuclear weapons to be used against other nations.

    Denis Hayes was a huge environmental advocate. He organized the first Earth Day. He educated the public on environmental issues and solutions to those issues. He was also an advocate for solar power. Denis Hayes showed people the impacts of environmental neglect.

    President Richard Nixon was sympathetic toward environmental issues. He was aware that the environment was in danger from the toxins and pollution. As a result, Nixon created the Environmental Protection Act, also known as the EPA. The EPA designates actions that can help protect the environment.

    The Stockholm Conference was the first national conference held to discuss environmental issues. The goal of the meeting was to find ways to enhance and preserve the environment. Conservation and environmental action plans were made to help protect the environment.
