Enlightenment and French Revolution

  • May 5, 1789 meeting with the Estates-General

    A meeting at the Menu Plaisirs building in Versailles, France, to address the country's financial and societal crises. The meeting was led by King Louis the XVI.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    A pivotal moment in the French Revolution. The oath was taken by people who represented the Third Estate. In that oath, the representatives swore they would not separate until a constitution was established for France.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    Where a large crowd of Parisians, who were angry at the monarchy's oppressive rule over them, stormed and took control of Bastille, which was a royal fortress and prison.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man

    It was a foundational document of the French Revolution that included points such as Sovereignty, Freedom of Expression, and Natural rights.
  • Women's March on Versailles

    It was a spontaneous uprising of women in the Paris marketplaces who were protesting against the high price and scarcity of bread.
  • Execution of King Louis XVI

    King Louis XVI was put to death by Guillotine. The blade was dull so it went halfway through his neck, leaving him paralyzed but still alive and screaming.
  • Maximillian Robespierre's execution

    He was the tenth person executed that day and he was executed by Guillotine. He tried to shoot himself prior, but only broke his jaw. It marked the end of the reign of terror.
  • Reign of Terror

    It was a period of state-sanctioned violence and mass executions that occurred during the French Revolution.A series of massacres and public executions took place during this period.
  • Peninsular War (another timespan, 2 dates)

    A war in the Iberian Peninsula against the invading forces of Napeoleon's France. It was fought over the control of the Iberian Peninsula. Fought between the French and an alliance of Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
  • Napoleonic Code is Established

    Also known as the Civil Code of 1804, was established by Napoleon Bonaparte to reform France's legal system. It made significant changes to French Law such as changes to Inheritance, Court systems, and Secularism.
  • Napoleon Crowns himself emperor

    Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of the French in a ceremony at Notre Dame Paris. He then proceeded to become one of the best if not the best military general in human history.
  • Napoleon is exiled to Elba

    Napoleon was exiled to the Island of Elba, after being forced to leave his throne. He later escaped and rode a boat back to France, and once again created a massive army.
  • Napoleon and his men march on Russia

    Napoleon and his men start an invasion on Russia. He started the invasion too late. He and all of his forces retreated but 2/3 of them died along the way.
  • Napoleon Dies

    He died on the Island of St. Helena. His death is still under mystery and controversy. But there is a theory that he was poisoned.
