Conquest
It began with the entry of the Spaniards in 1537, by the north of our region from Chachapoyas to Moyabamba. His passage through San Martin was horror, destruction and death. The expedition of San Martin de la Riva y Herrera to conquer the jíbaros, motilones and cumbazas of this zone, gave origin to the foundation of Lamas, the 10 of October of 1656. Tarapoto was the seat for the accomplishment of this conquest. -
Colonization
The colonization was directed by the missionaries. In the year 1769, the king of Spain ordered the expulsion of the Jesuits from Peru. In the year 1739, the Viceroyalty of New Granada was created and had as its audience Quito.Our city was under the jurisdiction of the audience for 63 years until the King of Spain, on July 15, 1802, ordered the return of territories ceded. Because of its location, Tarapoto was the seat of colonization. -
Foundation
It was founded on August 20, 1782 by the Spanish bishop Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañón. -

The Trajectory
Since September 14, 1906, the city is part of the department of San Martín.
In the year 1960, Tarapoto, Morales, and La Banda de Shilcayo counted as a whole an extension of 220 hectares, with a population of 16,000 inhabitants. -
Nowadays
Currently, Tarapoto is the main tourist and commercial axis of this part of the north-east of Peru and is the center of the terrestrial networks and areas in the north-east of Peru. Tarapoto is at 353 meters above sea level, while the province of San Martín has an altitude variation between 120 and 1600 meters above sea level. The city is located in the valleys of the Cumbaza and Shilcayo rivers.
