  • 1066

    ANGLO-SAXON LITERATURE

    The first words in English, written in an Angulo-Saxon dialect known as Old English, appeared in the early Middle Ages.
    The language is closely related to the current Norwegian language and with the Icelandic language these were the first Vikingo and Germanic war poems
  • Period: 1066 to 1300

    MIDDLE AGES

    Medieval literature is called all those works written mainly in Europe during the Middle Ages, that is, during approximately one thousand years since the fall of the Western Roman Empire until the beginning of the Renaissance at the end of the 16th century. The literature of this time was basically composed of religious writings, a broad and complex concept, ranging from the most sacred writings to the most profane.

    LITERATURE AFTER THE NORMANDE CONQUEST

    Not until the 16th century when Albion, when Albion became independent and its relations with France became more distant, did the language begin to change.

    ISABELINE LITERATURE

    The Elizabethan Era witnessed the flourishing of literature, especially drama: producing the so-called Elizabethan theater.
    During this period the writer, William Shakespeare, made his appearance.
    Thomas Wyatt introduced the sonnet to England in the early 16th century.
  • Period: 1400 to

    RENAISSANCE

    In 1476, William Caxton introduced the printing press to England. From that moment on, vernacular literature began to flourish. The Protestant Reformation inspired the production of a liturgy of its own that led to the Book of Common Prayer, a key influence on English literature. The poetry, drama and prose that were written during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I make up what is now called the "English Renaissance."
  • JACOBITA LITERATURE

    After Sharkespeare's death, the poet and playwright Ben Jonson became the most prominent figure in literature.
    Another stage style that became very popular During the Jacobin era was the plays of revenge, popularized by John Webster and Thomas Kyd.
  • RESTORATION LITERATURE

    Restoration literature includes such disparate works as John Milton's Paradise Lost, John Wilmot's Sodom.
