  • Period: 450 to 1066

    Old English period

    In this period several events occurred, one of them is the attack and the conquest of the Celtic England area by "a tribe Germanic settlers who were a mixture of people from the north of Germany, Denmark and the north of Holland" (Socorro Independent School District).

    Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower

    In the second half of the fourteenth century Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower make their appearance, which did great works regarding religious and satirical poems such as "Piers Plowman".     This period was the most notable with respect to literature due to its demanding and brilliant achievements, in the Elizabethan and early periods of "Stuart represent the most brilliant century of all".

    Elizabeth I

    The reign of Elizabeth I began in 1558 and ended with his death in 1603,
  • Jacobin

    After Elizabeth I death, she was replaced by King Stuart James VI of Scotland, who took the title of James I of England. The literature of that time was considered one of the best due to a large number of genius authors. The English literature of the reign of James I was called Jacobin, his reign was from 1603 to 1625

    In this period arises the evolution of industrial society, the rise of great towns and cities, and dramatic increases in population enabled ( Frawley, 2018)

    It was considered the era of the English novel, where Charles Dickens was stood out for his novels full of humor and drama

    The writing was based on the somber feelings of the new century
  • Innovation

    The most significant writing of the period, traditionalist or modern, was inspired by neither hope nor apprehension but by bleaker feelings that the new century would witness the collapse of a whole civilization.
