Confucius was an ancient Chinese philosopher. He produced The Analects and founded Confucianism. Confucius taught the importance of uprightness and morality, trust and trustworthiness, and respect for oneself and others. He is thought to have been born in precisely 551 BCE. -
Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu was an ancient Chinese philosopher. He wrote the Tao Te Ching and believed that his followers should be connected with nature. It is projected that Lao Tzu was born in around 601 BCE. -
Benjamin Franklin's Aphorisms
In the 1730's-1750's, Ben Franklin composed an almanac of aphorisms under the pseudonym "Poor Richard". An aphorism is a statement that is laconic, to the point, and gives insight to the general truth of a generation.
Examples: "A penny earned is a penny saved." "There are no gains without pains." " -
African Proverbs
Proverbs and aphorisms both are used to briefly describe a certain detail of a generation. African proverbs relate to African culture. We studied proverbs from six different tribes, Uganda: The Baganda, Liberia: The Jabo, South Africa: The Zulu, Ghana: The Ashanti, Nigeria: The Yoruba, Tanzania and Kenya: The Massai. -

A spunky, red-headed, orphan girl is adopted by an elderly brother and sister, neither of which were ever married. She finds herself in a beautiful home on a beautiful piece of land. her new home feels like a wonderland in comparison to the orphanage or less-than-desirable homes before. Anne is a very bright young lady who loves to read and has quite the vocabulary for an 11 year old.

Sighet before WWII
Elie is a young boy at the age of twelve years old. Before WWII, he and his family lived in Sighet, Hungary. He has two sisters and is the only male of his siblings. Elie is a very faithful young man who puts his trust in God.
After the Nazi Regime came into Sighet, to deport foreign Jews, Moche the Beadle was taken to a death camp. Elie admired Moche the Beadle very much and he was Elie's religious mentor. -
Denial
Jews are not willing to face the fact that this was happening. They were to be deported and still chose to believe that everything was going to be just fine.

Manhattan Project
In the midst of WWII, the USA decided to drop two nuclear bombs on Japan. The first bomb was dropped in Hiroshima and the second in Nagasaki. Harry Truman was president at this time and said dropping the bomb was "the hardest decision" of his life. Truman knew that dropping the bomb would immediately end the was between the US and Japan, but it may also e the start of a nuclear arms race. -
Nuremberg Trials
The Nuremberg Trials were the public legal trials of the Nazis after the Holocaust. The Nuremberg Trials took place in Nuremberg, Germany from 1945-1949. Nazis were charged with crimes against peace and crimes against humanity. There were 13 total trials and the end result was lynching. -
The Giver
The Giver takes place in what could be described as a Utopian society. There are no decisions that an individual is allowed to make for themselves. Families and job status are assigned to the leaders of particular communities. -
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Mandela won due to his acts of bravery and leadership. He was imprisoned in 1961 for committing treason against African leaders and was not released for many years. Mandela fought for black African citizens to obtain power and to abolish apartheid, segregation. Mandela was elected president of Africa in 1994 and served until 1999. -

The Notebook is the story of two high school sweethearts, who were forbidden to love one another, but find each other in the end. When Allie is to be married, she chooses to visited her past lover, Noah, and they fall in love all over again. Allie is engaged to Lon, but Lon is just not as dreamy as Noah. -
George Takei
Although he is most identified by his role in Star Trek, George Takei lived through much more than just exploring the galaxy. As a young boy, he was contained in Japanese concentration camps controlled by the US. Takei created a TED talk in 2014 to explain why he remained an American citizen after this experience. -
Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen is a story about common issues of young adults. Evan Hansen is a high school senior who has experienced social anxiety most of his life. He sees a therapist who recommends that he write letters to himself in order to boost his self confidence. When another student, Connor Murphy, finds one of Evan's letters and finds it upsetting, Connor commits suicide. Evan and a group of students choose to keeps Connor's memory alive through a website.
