William Golding was born 9/19/1911 in Cornwall, England. His mother was a sufraget and his father was a teacher.

Golding started attending Brasenose College at Oxford in 1930. While at Oxford, he studied two years of science and then switched to taking literature classes.

Golding graduated with Bachelor of Arts in English.

Golding started to work at a small theatre in England. He worked on writing different pieces and doing different stage work.

Golding began teaching English and philosophy in Salisbury at Bishop Wordsworth's School. He remained teaching until 1961

Golding married Ann Brookfileld. They would have two children.

Golding joined the Navy in 1940. While in the Navy, he saw many incredible horrors and barbarity between humans.

Golding published the Lord of the Flies in 1954. He combined the horrors he saw in the navy to his experience with school boys.

In 1955, Golding was granted membership in the Royal Society of Literature. This was a great honor that was given to him because of Lord of the Flies

Golding won the Booker Prize in 1980 for his book Rites of Passage. This is an extremely prestigious British award.

Golding died in 1993 at the age of 81. He died from a heart attack.
