First Ashes
9th test between England and Australia was when the Ashes started. After England's first loss to Australia on English soil the obituary stated that English cricket had died, and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia". The English captain Ivo Bligh had vowed to "regain those ashes". In 1882/83 tour England won two of three tests and were presented with an urn with the ashes of a wooden bail inside, and so England won the ashes.
