U.S. Government Purchases Ellis Island
With the government in control of the land, it provided opportunities to expand and make it an immigration station. -

Ellis Island began to serve as an arsenal in New York. This was important for the War of 1812. -

The Federal Government spent 75,000 to construct an Immigration Station. -

After one year, over 450,000 immigrations passed through Ellis Island. -
Ellis Island Fire
The fire destroyed the records on Ellis Island and the immigration station became closed down for a fire proof reconstruction. -
Peak Year
Ellis Island reaches it's peak year with over 1,000.000 immigrants processed. The Immigration Station was becoming too small for the amount of immigrants coming in. -
The Black Tom Explosion
German agents bombed Ellis Island to destroy the weapons being kept there. -
The War in Europe
After entering the war, immigrants that were suspected to be against the U.S. were brought to Ellis Island for detainment. -
The U.S. Army and Navy Take Over the Island
Ellis Island becomes a place to heal the wounded for the U.S. Army and Navy. During this period, immigration declined greatly. -
The First Immigration Quota Law
It riled up the immigrants and it made them harder to control. It also was the first step in controlling the amount of immigrants coming into the country. -
The Immigration Act of 1924
Mass immigration ended in the United States and Ellis Island became a place to hold the illegal immigrants or the immigrants who violated the terms of being in the U.S. -

Ellis Island's primary use was a detnetion center for suspicious aliens. -
Pearl Harbor
The U.S. officially enters World War II. Ellis Island becomes a detention center for alien enemies. -
The Internal Security Act of 1950
The act prevented aliens who were members of Communist and Fascist groups to enter to the country. They also screened for diseases and the likelyhood of becoming a bad citizen. -
The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952
By restricting immigration even more, Ellis Island held less than 30 detainees. -
Ellis Island closes.
Ellis Island was add to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and in 1990, a Ellis Island Museum opened up.
