Elizabeth Cady Stanton

  • Co-Authored the Declaration of Sentiments

Stanton was the primary author of this work that served as the agenda for which the first woman's rights convention was based on. The idea that she presents in this work, that women should have an equal place in government and in the conversation of their rights, was the basis of early women's rights conversations and efforts. Stanton made a bold and effective claim that women are not visible or respected in the same way that men are, but they should be.
  • Hosted the first Woman's Rights Convention

Eight years after Stanton met Lucreia Mott, the two held the first woman's rights convention in Seneca New York. The two day convention amassed a crowd of around 300 women and included discussions of many serious women's rights issues that are still of concern today. Some of these were a woman’s right to vote, to own property, to have a right to their children in the event of divorce or separation from their husbands, and even to their own wages that they had worked for.
  • Founded the National Woman's Suffrage Association

The NWSA was founded by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony as an organization in opposition of the fifteenth amendment. While the association agreed with voting rights being given to African American men, they were unsatisfied with the lack of inclusion for women in that amendment. The association stood to effect change in law making so that women would then be able to vote.
  • Published The Woman's Bible

Stanton published The Woman’s Bible as the head of a committee made up of 26 other women. The text is a collection of essays that act as commentary on each book of the Christian Bible. This commentary focuses on the ways in which women are shamed and looked down on in Biblical texts.
