Cold War Espionage
Cold War Espionage began after WWII as a way for agencies to collect information about the other side's intentions. This included information on military and technology advances. Igor Gouzenko was a Soviet defector to Canada. He brought with him information about Stalin's plans to steal nuclear secrets. -
Berlin Airlift
Canada was part of a multinational air force that provided supplies to West Berlin. This prevented the Soviets from succeeding in taking control of the entire city when they blocked roads, railways and canals. -
NATO
NATO was formed to provide intergovermental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty. It is a collective defence made up of 28 members across North America and Europe. -
Colombo Plan
Canada was part of the group of seven commonwelth nations. The purpose of the plan was to promote support for the economic and social developement of Asia and the Pacific. -
Korean War
Canada was part of the allied forces who joined other countries to help South Korea stop the Soviets and Communist Chinese invasion from North Korea. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Cuban Missile Crisis was a conflict between Soviet Union and Cuba against the United States. It was discovered that the Soviet Union was building Nuclear Missile bases. The bases were close enough to reach continental United States. Canadian Navy and Airforce played a role by blockading Soviet missiles to reach Cuba. -
Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis was a military conflict between Egypt on one side, Britain, France and Israel on the other side. The United Nations played a major role in forcing Britain, France and Israel to withdraw. The president of Egypt had wanted to nationalize the canal with the Soviet Union. The attacks were to regain western control of the canal. -
Peace Keeping Missions
In 1964 Canadian troops went to Cyprus to maintain balance between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the newly created island of Cyprus. -
SALT Agreement
The Salt agreement was done between the USSR and USA to stop or slow down the build up of nuclear weapons -
Canada- USSR Summit Series
The Summit series was the game between the soviets and Canada in 1972. Canada won the series four games to three. -
US Star Wars
This was a program propossed by President Reagan called the Strategic Defence Initiative. It was a project created to construct a space based anti-missile system. With this system missiles sent from other countries eg. Russia, could be intercepted before hitting their target. -
Nicaragua
U.S. involvement in Nicaragua dates back to mid-nineteenth century, whereas Canada wasn't involved prior to the Sandinista revolution of 1979. The American policies over Nicaragua changed dramitically over this time whereas Canadian policies did not. The difference between the policies was that Canada did not support the U.S. backed Contra rebels. -
Soviet war in Afghanistan
Canada sent peace keepers to afganistan and imposed sanctions and also boycotted the 1980 olympics along with the USA -
Moscow 1980
The summer Olympics in Moscow were boycotted by the United States to protest Soviet involvement in Afganistan. Athletes from a number of countries marched under the Olympic Flag rather then their country's flag in protest. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was built to keep East Berlin fleeing to West Berlin, post WWII. With the Soviet Reforms initiated by Gorbachev it brought about the end of the division between the East and West. Borders were opened and people were allowed to pass through freely. -
Gorbachev
Russian President Gorbachev reform and summit conferences with the U.S. contributed to the end of the cold war. He ended the Communist Party and dissolved the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.
