1546: Discovery of The New Island
In 1546 sailors had been aimlessly sailing for days when they came across the island. Upon arrival the sailors gave an image of the virgin Mary to the islanders, representing hope in the new world. After this the sailors were able to pick up wind and continue their journey. -
1997: Consortium
The main idea behind this was to shift the energy from diesel fuel based, to a more efficient type of energy. This would include wind turbine power, as well as water turbines. -
2002: Environmental friendly plan
Plans to start converting the island into a healthy and efficient environment started back in 2002 -
2014: Energy independence
An article published in 2014 talks about how the island of El Hierro is nearing their goal of becoming 100% based on renewable energy. The article further went into talking about how the island hopes to have all electric cars by the year 2020. Renewable energy means the island is 100% self sufficient -
2020: Today
El Hierro is still striving to make better improvements in their environment. The goal of making all cars electric is still in production, and the wind/water turbines have allowed the island to be extremely energy efficient to this day.
