    Frederick was born in Tuckahoe Maryland. He was separated from his mother a few months after he was born and it is told that his father was a white man who used to be his master.

    At this time Frederick had just left Baltimore. While in Baltimore he had earned to read and write from the little kids in town. Therefore because of his education he now knows what date it is and how to keep track of them.
  • Mr. Covey

    Frederick was sent to Mr. Coveys by his master Thomas Auld. Thomas sent Frederick there to be broken. Covey was know as the nigger breaker and gets the slaves into shape. Everybody sends their slaves to Covey so they can be whooped into shape. Therefore Covey owned Frederick for a year.

    Frederick was working on one of the hottest days. He started to get a massive headache and light headed. He fell and Mr. Covey immediately came out. He asked where Frederick was and went to him at once. Frederick told him what was wrong with the little breath he had. Covey then kicked him in the side and told him to get up. He failed then Covey kicked him again. Frederick tried again but failed. At that point Covey hit Frederick upon the head and made a huge wound. Frederick was being broken.

    Out of the kindness of their masters the slaves were not required to work from Christmas Day to New Years. The slaves with families that lived far went to visit them. They got to stay in there society for six day. They played games and caught up with one another.

    Frederick finally left Mr. Covey and went to go serve Mr. William Freeland. Freeland was very different from Covey. He wasn't rich and was like an educated southern gentleman. Freeland had no religion which Frederick loved because Frederick believed that religion made them worse.

    At this time Frederick got an estimate of how old he was. He found this out from his master he was with at the time. His master said he was around the age of twenty-seven and twenty-eight years.
  • Protections

    Frederick and some other slaves planned to run away. They wanted to go up the river at night until they reached the boarder of Maryland. They needed protections incase they got caught. If they got caught they would just show the protections and then possibly get away safe. The protections stated that their master was aware of them leaving and is okay with it. Frederick had to write them because he was the one that could write.
