    At the end of the second World War, many of the strong European nations were in decline. Colonies were steadily becoming more and more independent, and Israel had just been created. It was during this time that Nasser first comes to power(1950s). Up until Nasser’s rise Egypt had been ruled under the British government.

    On October 29, 1956, Israeli army moved into Egypt toward the Suez Canal after Egyptian president Nasser nationalized the Suez canal in July of 1956, initiating the Suez Crisis. The Israelis soon were joined by French and British forces, which nearly brought the Soviet Union into the conflict, and damaged their relationships with the United States (cold war foreshadowing). In the end, the British, French and Israeli governments withdrew their troops in early 1957.

    Born in 1918, Sadat was a great president in Egypt’s history, and He worked in the military up until the 1950s. He then helped to overthrow Egypt’s monarchy, for doing so he was given the job as vice president of Egypt. He served as vice president until 1970. One of the main struggles Egypt was going through when he was elected was economic instability. In 1978 Sadat was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for entering into peace agreements with Israel, and finally recognizing them.

    The peace treaty between Israel and Egypt was signed by the Israeli prime minister, and the Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. The U.S. president at the time, Jimmy Carter, acted as a third party to try to get these two countries to make an agreement so as to prevent having another Egypt-Israeli war.

    Anwar Sadat was assassinated by a group of Muslim extremists in army uniforms, they hurled hand grenades, and shot assault rifles at him while he was watching a parade. He died October 6, 1981. He was sonly replaced by a man named Hosni Mubarak who would go on to rule until 2011 when he was swept out of office by massive amounts of protesting.
