War of 1948
Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria attack Israel. Israel was attacked the same day that it gained its independence. The combined attack was on a very large scale and many thought Israel would not last. One major problem for Egypt and her alllies was that they had no way to communicate and co-ordinate their attacks. Israel was victorious. -
Arab Leader
During the summer of 1949 there wasn't a leader of the Arab world. Egypt appeared to be the one to be the leader. They were stopped because the Egyptian Royal Family wasn't popular. Because of this,[ Nasser](http:www.historylearningsite.co.uk/israel_and_the_1948_war.htm) rose to power. -
Riot
At least 20 people were killed in Cairo riots. hundreds injured in the anti British riot.The Egyptian prime minister, Nahas Pasha, called the people responsible traitors, who were trying to overthrow the government by insulting the British. -
The Six Day War
The Six Day war was begun by General Moshe Dayan, Israeli's Defence Minister. The war was between Israel, Syria, Jordan and Egypt. In may 1967, the Egyptians made it clear they didn't want the United Nations in the Suez region. Instead of waiting to be attacked, the Israelis launched a military campaign against them and won, dystroying many egyptian tanks. Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq's air force were completely eradicated as well. -
Yom Kippur War
Yom kippur is the holiest day of the year for the jewish people. It is also known as "Day of Atonement." The Arabian coalition launched a suprise attack on Israeli occupied territories. Egyptian and Syrian forces crossed xeasefire lines and entered the Golan heights. The Golan heights had been captured by Israel in the Six Day War. The United States initiated massie resupply efforts to Israel while the Soviet Union did the same for the Arab coalition ( they resupplied Egypt and Syria ) -
Sadat assassinated
Anwar Sadat was the President of Egypt. He was assassinated during the annual victory parade held in Cairo to celebreate Egypt's crossing of the Suez Canal ( the war on Israel ) A fatwa approving the assassination had been obtained from Omar MbdelRahman, a cleric later convivted in the US for his role in the 1993 world Trade Center bombing. The assassination was done by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. -
Egypt rejoins the Arab League.
In May 1989, Egypt was readmitted and resumed membership. The headquarters was returned to Cairo in 1990.[1] This step was sharply disputed as members of the League were deeply divided over the Kuwait crisis and the invitation extended by Saudi Arabia to the United States, which allowed foreign military build-up in its Eastern province. The League was effectively paralyzed by the eruption of the Gulf crisis, and its future as a regional organization became highly uncertain. -
Shooting
Fifty-eight tourists are killed by gunmen in front of the Temple of Hatshepsut near Luxor. It is alleged that Egypt's Islamic Group (Jemaa Islamiya) is responsible. -
Fire train
363 people were killed. Egypt’s officials said a gas stove being used by a passenger on board the packed train started the fire, according to MENA.Egypt has the largest amount of railroad in the middle East, and they have some SERIOUS safety issues. -
cleanup
The Egyptian military starts to trial terrorists. They rip the muslim brotherhood of all asets and kick them out of government. Hundreds are killed as security forces storm protest camps in Cairo set up by supporters of Mr Morsi. The Muslim Brotherhood says the dead overall number 2,200. State of emergency declared and curfews imposed.
