Education Act
Intoduction of this act held high importance as it built the foundations of the post-war education system in England and Wales.
Giles (communist and teacher's leader) backed the introduction of a free, universal education system for students up to 18 because it enabled children's education to be based on their ability and potential rather than their
parent's financial circ's.
3 stages of education: primary, secondary and further.
All secondary schools free (except direct grant grammar schools). -
GCE introduced
(General Certificate of Education) -
Crowther report
Recommended that the school leaving age should be raised to 16 years for secondary and further education should be accessible to 15-18 year olds. -
Education Act
LEA's responsbile for ensuring that students attend school.
LEA's also required to provide students with grants for living costs and tution fees. -
Plowden report
Child-centred education:
structured individual-centred lessons,
smaller class sizes,
group work. -
School leaving age- 16 years
Leaving age eventually raised to 16 years after a change in the preparations for this which began in 1964. -
Sex Discrimination Act
Legislation that provided protection for males and females from being discriminated on the grounds of gender. Introduction of "Equal Opportunities Commission". -
Race Relations Act
Protects against discrimination of the grounds of race. "Commission for Racial Equality" introduced to reinforce this act. -
Callaghan's speech
Labour PM gave a speech focussing on the centralisation of education and highlighted that it was important that a "basic" curriculum was introduced that had "universal standards". These standards would include basic literacy, numeracy and how to live and work together and respect each other. -
Education Act
LEA's:
Responsible for identifying children with learning difficulties.
Procedures for assessment of these diffculties.
Provide "statements" that suggested how the needs would be catered for. -
Swann Report
Recommended that:
Education should be sensitive to the diverse range of ethnicities and that training should be provided to increase teachers' awareness. Stated that it was important to recognise how to educate all children not just those of ethnic minority backgrounds. Use of education would help to reconcile and teach the majority white population to allow better integration of ethnic minorities into society. -
Education Reform Act
Brought about a basic curriculum (R.E. and NC subjects)- 3 core subjects i.e. English, Maths and Science. 6 foundation i.e. history, geography, technology, music, art and P.E. and MFL at KS3 and KS4.
Established local management of schools, grant maintained schools- able to select proportion of students upon ability. -

Ofsted
Education (Schools) Act 1002 established Ofsted (Office for standards in education). Government department to regulate and inspect education instituions in England. (2007: to be named Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills). -

Went on to join the choir and learnt to play the recorder and penny-whistle. -
White paper: Excellence in Schools
Secondary schools to become specialised, alllow small proportion of pupils to be selected on basis of ability,
targets for schools to raise standards,
performance tables to illustrate pupil progression,
racial harmony promoted and raising achievements of ethnic minorities,
setting in secondary school recommended for science, maths and languages,
better training for teachers in numeracy, literacy and IT and more support for NQT's. -

I started secondary school!
St. Peter's CofE High School (S-o-T).
I went on to play for the school rounders and netball teams, was selected to be a prefect, peer mentor and voted co-sports captain of Truro house.
I also took part in a talent competition- went as Destiny's Child and performed one of their songs! -
Year 9 options
Double Science, English Language and Literature, Maths, French, German, GNVQ IT, RE and Child Development. -
Uni fees
Mp's voted to allow universities to charge variable fees. (2006 UCAS revealed 15, 000 fewer students had gone to uni comapred with the year before). -

Higher standards, better schools for all (DfES)
Department for Education and Skills published paper. Recommended personalised learning, support for all children and parents. -
Year 11 GCSE's

Started Sixth Form
Studied Double Applied Science, Sociology and Citizenship at AS Level. -
Continued A Level studies
Continued into A2 year of Double Applied Science and Sociology. (Citizenship was just an AS level subject) Picked up AS Use of Maths. -

Government initiative that proposes that all children regardless of background or circumstances, must be provided with the means/opportunity to stay healthy, safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and acheive economic well-being. -

Education and Skills Act
Raised the education leaving age to 18 years. KS3 SATs abolished. -
Withdrew from University of Leicester
The course was not what I had hoped it would be, so decided to withdraw and for the next 6 months I worked full-time at A&E. -

Role of LA's decreased, school's given more power in terms of managing pupil behaviour and exclusions and increase in number of academies. -
Graduation & commencement of PGCE
Graduated from Uni with a 2:1 (Hons).
Started PGCE in Secondary Education Biology.
