This allowed for continued growth in education in many areas including: special education, social emotional learning, preparing students for school and even changes in physical education.   • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    Under the 2002 law, states are required to test students in reading and math in grades 3–8 and once in high school. All students are expected to meet or exceed state standards in reading and math by 2014.

  • SB 719

    SB 719
    A mandated comprehensive safety plan that is the result of a systematic planning process, that include strategies aimed at the prevention of, and education about, potential incidents involving crime and violence on school campuses, and that address the safety concerns of local law enforcement agencies, community leaders, parents, pupils, teachers, administrators, school police, and other school employees interested in the prevention of school crime and violence.

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 is a United States law that mandates equity, accountability and excellence in education for children with disabilities. It authorizes formula grants to states, as well as discretionary grants for research, technology, and training.

    Khan Academy
    Khan Academy is a not-for-profit educational organization started by Salman Khan in 2008. He began by recording educational tutoring videos and posting them on YouTube in 2006 so everyone could watch and learn at their own pace. The organization was incorporated as a 501c(3) nonprofit in 2008. Their mission is to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. This program has revolutionized online learning.

    CASEL publishes the Sustainable Schoolwide SEL Implementation Guide and Toolkit to provide essential tools and resources for SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) implementation in schools.
  • The Flipped Classroom

    The Flipped Classroom
    Pioneered by two high school teachers in Colorado, a flipped classroom is an instructional strategy. A type of blended learning, which aims to increase student engagement and learning by having students complete readings (video assignments) at their home and work on live problem-solving during class time.

    kindergarten and first grade; and established a transitional kindergarten program.
  • America COMPETES Act of 2010

    America COMPETES Act of 2010
    Originally passed in 2007, the reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act of 2010 continues a robust investment in basic research and education and preserves the essence of the original Act by increasing the investment focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education as a national priority. The Act requires the plan to be rewritten every 5 years.

    MyPlate
    In 2011, the notorious "Food Pyramid" taught in schools regarding health and nutrition was replaced by, "My Plate." The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) created MyPlate, an easy-to-follow food guide, to help parents and teachers figure out how to feed their kids nutritious, balanced meals. The colorful divided plate includes sections for vegetables, fruits, grains, and foods high in protein. The program provides an app to help students make healthy eating choices.
  • Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP)

    Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP)
    Presidential Fitness Test is replaced by the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP). Under the new program, students’ fitness will be measured using the Cooper Institute FITNESSGRAM, which measures five areas of health-related fitness: aerobic capacity, body composition, flexibility, muscle strength, and muscular endurance. The information collected can be used to inform course curriculum development, children's physical activity programming, and policy change.

  • Common Core in California

    Common Core in California
    The Common Core State Standards are a new set of academic standards adopted by 43 states . The standards are meant to prepare students for college and careers and to make the US more competitive academically. They're benchmarks for what students should know and be able to do in math and language arts from kindergarten through senior year of high school.

    California School Dashboard
    The CSD is an online tool that shows how local educational agencies and schools are performing on the state and local indicators included in California's school accountability system. The Dashboard is a component of the Local Control Funding Formula law passed in 2013 that significantly changed how California provides funding to public schools and holds local educational agencies accountable for student performance.

    Local Control Funding Formula
    Governments use a funding formula to determine how much money should be allocated to each school. The Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) is hallmark legislation that fundamentally changed how all local educational agencies (LEAs) in the state are funded, how they are measured for results, and the services and supports they receive to allow all students to succeed to their greatest potential.

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    It replaces NCLB and eliminates some of its most controversial provisions. Under the new law, the job of holding schools accountable largely shifts from the federal government to the states.

    COVID-19 Pandemic Leads to Online Schooling
    Many schools began shut downs in March, hoping to re-open 2 weeks later. As of April 10, 2020, most American public and private elementary and secondary schools—at least 124,000—had stopped in-person instruction nationwide, affecting at least 55.1 million students. Some would re-open at the start of the next school year, however many were shut down all of the 2020-2021 school year.

    California Assembly & Senate Bill 86
    After the COVID-19 pandemic began to slow down in positive result patients, AB-86 provides $2 billion as an incentive for schools that have not already done so to offer in-person instruction beginning April 1, starting with the earliest grades.
