  • English Language in Public Schools Statute (CA Prop 227)

    This proposition changed the way that "Limited English Proficient" students are taught. This proposition required schools to provide LEP students with special classes for about a year to provide them with the help they need to become proficient enough in English to return to their mainstream class rooms. This Act required non-English language leaners to participate in immersion classrooms.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    Requires all schools receiving federal funding to administer standardized testing to ensure adequate yearly progress.
  • The Development, Relief, and Education for Aliens Act (DREAM Act)

    Although first introduced in 2001, the DREAM Act saw many revisions before eventually being passed in 2009; it was rescinded in 2017 by President Trump. The DREAM Act allows provisional citizenship to qualifying individuals who are minors and working, in school, or meeting other criteria.
  • Higher Education Opportunity Act

    This act is a revision of the HEA 1965. This act requires institutions to provide calculators for prospective and current students to configure their financial costs based on their specific circumstance.
  • Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

    "a non-congressionally authorized administrative program that permitted certain individuals who came to the United States as juveniles and meet several criteria—including lacking any current lawful immigration status—to request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal, and eligibility for work authorization" U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2012.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    This act ensures that all students receive an equitable education, and are taught to "high academic standards". This act aimed to promote positive change in low-income and low-performing schools.
  • California Multilingual Education Act

    An appeal on Prop 227. This Act provides non-English language learners with the opportunity to learn outside of immersion classrooms, which multiple programs available to them.
  • COVID-19 Pandemic. Schools Closed.

    March 2020, World Health Organization declares COVID-19 a pandemic. In the days following the declaration, President Trump declares a national emergency, leading schools to close in-person instruction, and resume classes online.
