Educational History

  • Massachusetts Act of 1642

    Massachusetts Act of 1642
Massachusetts passed laws which enabled the selectmen of the town to visit homes of children to ensure the children were receiving an education. The children were required to be taught how to read so they would be able to understand religion and laws. Education became compulsory for boys and girls under this Act. I believe these laws set the precedent that education is important for all children and it held parents and masters accountable for the children's education.
  • First State Board of Education

    First State Board of Education
Massachusetts was the first state to implement a state board of education. Horace Mann was the first secretary of education. His role was to convince the American people that education should be universal, nonsectarian, and free. Essentially the state board was able to reach out to the American public with their vision of what public education should look like.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
The Brown vs. Board of Education ruling gave African American students the right to study in the same facilities as other students. In addition they could receive the same educational opportunities which would help their educational and emotional growth. I believe it gives everyone a fair chance to be successful in their life journey.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

Education for All Handicapped Children Act
Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975 allows children with disabilities to receive a free and appropriate public education, an individualized education plan, special education services, related services, due process procedures, and a least restrictive environment to learn in. This act allows special needs children should all be treated as an equal and allowed the educational opportunities needed to be successful.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was an important to pass because the previous No Child Left Behind Act was not working effectively. The new law helps to ensure a fair education to all learners. The statewide assessments also are important to assessing the student learning and they can make positive changes when they see a problem.
