  • First free school

    The first free school opened in Virginia. This was important because it allowed anyone access to education, not just the rich.

    Hartford public high school was established. This was important because it was the first public secondary school which was the start of normalizing high school for everyone.
  • First college

    The first American college, Harvard was created. This is important because it was the start of post-secondary schools in the U.S.
  • Compulsory education

    Massachusetts became the first colony to make the heads of households responsible to teach all dependents, children and adults, to read, write, and about the laws of the colony or face a fine. This is important because it is the first time that it was required for everyone to be educated.

    A law was passed that required towns of 50 people or more to hire a school master to teach the children to read and write. This was important because it meant that instead of parents teaching their children, their would be an actual teacher to teach them.
