Boys Only
Boston Latin School was the first public school to open. The school was in the home of Schoolmaster Philemon Pormont. Only boys could attend the School. Boston Latin School is still an open school in Boston, and they now accept boys and girls. -
Litchfield Opens For Female Education
Sarah Pierce founded Litchfield Female Academy. Sarah believed in the post-revolutionary rhetoric of Republican Motherhood, believing the responsibility of women was to provide the early intellectual and moral training of their children. Sarah believed this was crucial for the country to survive. -
First School For The Blind
Perkins School for the blind was the first of it's kind. The school was orginally named New England Asylum for the Blind, the name was later changed to Perkins School. The school is named after Thomad Handasyd Perkins. Helen Keller was one of the many children with a visual disabilities to attend the school. Perkins School for the blind is still located in Watertown, Massachusetts. The School is still helping the blind learn. -
Office Of Education
The Office Of Education was created to help states effectively manage schools. Henry Barnard was the first Commissioner of Education in 1867. Barnard changed the name to Bureau Of Education during his service time. The Department is now called the Dapartment Of Education . -
Brown Vs. Board
In the case Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, a landmark decision was made. The United States Surpreme Court declared it was unconstitutional to have segregation in public schools. -
Title IX
Title IX states that no person in the United States can be subjected to discrimination or denied benefits based on gender. This law made it possible for women to have opportunities in sports and higher education. -
Columbine High School Massacre
Two Columbine High School students went on a shooting spree that left 15 dead and 23 wounded. This was the first tragedy of it's kind in a school. Schools responded with tightening safety policies. The community along with the counrty was devastated by this random act. The student's lost beacause of the shooting at Columbine have a Memorial dedicated to them. The Memorial opened in 2007. -
Double Dipping
States are putting a stop to what is considered "double Dipping" by educators. Almost of the States have passed a law in the past year that put restrictions on teachers' returning to the classroom.
