    Proposed by President Dwight Eisenhower regarding the voting rights of blacks. He believed that, "...the United States must make certain that every citizen who is entitled to vote under the Constitution is given actually that right." After Senator Thurmond led the longest filibuster in history (24 hours, 18 minutes) the bill was ratified by both the Senate and the House.

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Inititally addressed by President Kennedy in his civil rights speech in 1963, Johnson introduced the bill in order to honor Kennedy's memory, and, more importantly, address important social problems in America. The bill addressed discrimination against women and discrimination against blacks. The bill forbid "seperate but equal" types of settings (ie. schools, buses, restaurants, etc.)

    President Johnson's Great Society proposed.
    Johnson's "baby" that was overshadowed, and eventually given up on, by the Vietnam War. Reforms addressed education, civil rights, transportation, environment, poverty, health, and art. Regarding education, a budget of $1 billion was assigned to help public schools develop better programs. Scholarships for low-income families also came into play.

    This bill, signed by President Johnson in 1965, gave more funding to American Universities in order to allow better resources and programs. The bill also allowed more aid to individual students on a scholarship basis.

The show was geared toward inner-city children who might have not been getting the best quality education; Sesame Street intended to instill a desire to learn in these children. This is one of the first times technology has been used to make education more available to the public outside of school.
