The First Forms of Childcare: Slaves
The first forms of childcare using enslaved African women began in the 1500s and ended in 1865. (Childcare Aware of America, 2021, para. 1) Many Black women raised children for white owners during this time. This created change in US education because before, there was much denial of education to slaves or Blacks, but over time and lots of fighting for what was right, we were able to make education accessible for everyone and you aren't denied education based on your color. (Slaveryimages, 1875)

    Emergency Nursery Schools
During the great depression, many parents were re-employed and needed childcare. The New Deal created a program of Emergency Nursery Schools. (Childcare Aware of America, 2021, para. 8) This was actually made to offer employment to unemployed teachers but also helped the families of 75,000 children. This has changed US education because during this time education was interrupted for many children and we have seen this happen recently with the impact of covid. (Medium, 2015)

    Head Start begins
President Johnson started Head Start in 1965 to help children dealing with poverty. It was to help children with their emotional, social, health, nutritional, and educational needs. (Childcare of America, 2021, para. 14) This created change in US education because we are now seeing the government try to help children battling with poverty. Meeting these children needs is still used today and can really change a Childs life when they have these people care. (Obama White House Archives, 2015)

In 1972, ten percent of head start slots must serve children with disabilities. (Childcare of America, 2021, para. 18) Before this time, children with disabilities weren't publicly educated. This event was important to US education because we still use this requirement today. Overtime there was been improvements made to educating children with disabilities but this was the event that paved the way. (The New York Times, 2014)
  • Early Head Start Is Started

    Early Head Start Is Started
In 1994 infants and toddlers were now able to start early head start. (Childcare of America, 2021, para. 24) This program provided early education services, like developmental or social skills, and nutritional services. By the end of their year in this program almost 97% of these children had ongoing medical care. This program changed US education because in many of todays schools and education programs children are also provided with medical and dental care if needed. (hsolc.org, 1965)
