  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    An agreement made by Congress in 1820 under which Missouri was admitted to the Union as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. At first the compromise pulled the nation together it also led to anger after the south realized that they are weaker.
  • Compromise 1850

    Compromise 1850
    Was the agreements made in order to admit California into the Union as a free state. New Mexico and Utah were allowed to decide themselves if they wanted to allow slavery or not. Also in Washington D.C, slave trade was outlawed this helped creating a stronger fugitive slave law. It made thhe south mad becuase it unbalenced the slave and free states, they knew if the north had more free states and population then slavery would most likely be abolished

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    An act passed in 1854 that created the Kansas and Nebraska territories and abolished the Missouri Compromise by allowing settlers to determine wether slavery would be allowed in the new territoires.

    A Supreme Court decision in 1857 that held that African Americans could never be citizens of the United states and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    The Republixans were united behind Lincoln, the Northern Democrats nominated Stephen Douglas for president. Southern Democrats supported John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky. The race became even more confusing whena group called the Contitutional Union party nominated John Bell of Tennessee. However at the end of the election Lincoln sailed to victory. The south was now a minority, it no longer had power, they feared that slavery would soon be abolished.
