  • Canada at The Turn of the Century

    Canada at The Turn of the Century
    During the "Turn of the 20th Century" the Prime Minister at the time was Wilfred Laurier, also at this time the Minister of the Interior was Cliffor Sifton. Their main goal was to import immigrants to help out with the farming business. Laurier had 4 major policy compromises, Deomestic, Foreign. Domestic included The Naval Crisis, and the Boar War. The Foreign composed of Free Trade, and the Alaska Boundary Dispute.
  • Over Production and Over Expansion

    Over Production and Over Expansion
    With the profits businessmen would spend it on adding to factories or building new ones. They would stockpile all the surplus of good that were produced. If the stockpiles grew they would panic and slowed down their productions. When things would slow down then that meant that sales would slow down even more then before. They most often forgot the basic rule of production " produce only the amount of items you can sell "
  • Militarism

    Militarism
    Militarism back then was the beleif in the power of strong armies and navies to decide issues. It was based on an idea. The idea that it was based on was that if the nation is strong, no enemy would dare to attack it.

    Murder at Sarajevo
    In Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife the Archduchess Sophia arrived because he would one day be the ruler. They drove to the town hall, around 10am when a bomb that exploded on the hood of the limousine. Gavrilo Princip stepped up to the car and fired two shots from a pistol at pointblank range. Behin this murder was the group known as the "Black Hand" from Serbian
  • World War 1 Begins

    World War 1 Begins
    On July 28th, 1914 world war 1 had begun. During this time theere was a global war that had begun in Europe. The war had lasted until June 28th, 1919. There were two different alliances. The triple entente that consisted of the United Kingdom, France, and Russia. The other alliance is the triple alliance consiting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. On this date Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. On June 28th, 1919 the Treaty of Versaillies was signed which then ended the War.
  • WINNIPEG GENERAL STRIKE

    WINNIPEG GENERAL STRIKE
    During the 1920's there was a huge strike that happened with all employees of Winnipeg. Non-Unionized workers, like postal workers, waiters, etc, had walked off the job. There were over 30000 workers that were involved in the strike, and the strike lasted up to 6 weeks. During this strike there were 10 strike leaders, 2 leaders of the one big unioon were arrested and denied bail. They shot and killed 1 man and wounded 30 others. Ended on June 26th, 1919
  • World War I ( Treaty Of Versailles)

    World War I ( Treaty Of Versailles)
    It was the peace treaty which ended World War I. The Treaty Of Versailles put into place mainly to punish Germany, to humble Germany, and to weaken Germany so that she would be unable to cause another Wrold War. From this treaty Germany had lost 12% land, 12% population, 10% industry, and 15% agriculture. Hitler used the treaty to gain power over Germany.

    The Roaring Twenties ( glamour and prosperity)
    Jazz, movies, radio shows, dance clubs, contests (non-stop talking, kissing, eating, etc), crossword puzzles, flappers had become more popular. During this time also Women's liberation (voting) statred and was allowed.
  • Stock Market

    Stock Market
    PEople would buy stocks because they thought it was going to be an easy way to get rich. You didn;t always need to money to be involved with the Stocks. You could but with credits, which this caused a problem with the Stocks going down quickley and it got really expensive. After buying a Stock you would buy on the marign. This meant you would pay your broker back and then pocket the profits. On OCtober 29th, 1929 the value of Stocks started to drop and people panicked
  • The Holocaust

    The Holocaust
    The holocaust was a mass murder that had killed about 6 million Jew during World War II. This event was led by Adolf Hitler, and his Nazi party. There were origionaly 9 million residents in the consentration camps. Over 1 million of those 6 million that were killed were children. They would round up all the Jews they found on the streets and in their homes, and sent them to the camps, by freight cars. Which there they were gassed of starved which caused their death.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    Operation Barbarossa
    This was the battle where the Nazi's invaded The Soviet Union.There wers about 8.9 million combatants, over 18,000 tanks, 45,000 aircraft, and 50,000 artillery pieces on both sides combined. The Panzer armies later on captured and encircled 3 million Soviet soliders by the time they had reached Moscow. There were 800,000 troops who were killed, 3,000,000 wounded, and over 3,000,000 captured. 20,000 Soviet tanks and 21,000 aircraft were destroyed.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    1 million allied forces had landed with in a month. Troops had dropped behin the enemy lines after mid-night to cause chaos. The French undergrounf alerted to support the troops. After around 6 am the Naval forces bambarded beach targets. The Germans placed 3 obstacles on the beach. They included barbed wire on the sand dunes, tanks and machine guns.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    Hiroshima and Nagasaki teo places that bombs had been dropped. These bombs were meant to cause more U.S casuallities. The Enola dropped the first bomb "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th, 1945, which had killed 78,000 people, and injuring over 100,000. The second bomb "Fat Man" on Nagasaki, Japan which killed over 40,00 people.
  • The Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    The Berlin Blockade and Airlift
    During this the Soviets blocked allied lands access to the city of Berlin. This had blocked the supply of food, fuel, and aid giving the Soviets partcial control over the city. In order to fix this the allies organizeed the Berlin Airlift to carry supplies to the people in West Berlin. Since the blockade didn't stop anything the Soviets lifted the blockade in 1949 and created two states of East, and West Germany which was the divided by the Berlin Wall.

    The Berlin Wall was a barrier that was build by the German Republic. It was built to split up East Germany from West Germany. The east part had claimed the wall was built to protect their population form fascist elements. Where as the West part had named it the Wll Of Shame. The wall had olso been reffered to as the Iron Curtain by everyone. The wall had cut off a lot of things. Due to this wall they had to start the Berlin Blacade, and Airlift since the wall cut most of the resources.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    During this time the Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world has ever come to a nuclear war. Soviet Union placed nuclear missiles in communist cuba, aimed at the USA. The Us discovered the missiles. The US demanded all effensive weapons be removed and declared that any missile strike would be an act of war. Soviet President, Kruschev agreed to the US president, Kennedy's demands to remove the missile sites from Cuba, averting WWII
  • Stalin's Daughter Defects

    Stalin's Daughter Defects
    On this day, Stalin's daughter Svetlana Alliluyeva had walked into the American Embassy and asked for asylum. She stated " I have come here to seek the self-expression that has been denied me for so long in Russia”. She wasn't famous for doing such she was famous from her father being the head of the Soviet Union Empire.
  • Immigration Act Introduced

    Immigration Act Introduced
    The immigration act was introduced by Pierre Trudeau and the Liberal Government. They wanted to be able to reunite families that were seperated by any reason, accept the displaced and persecuted for humanitarian reasons, and attract people who promote the domestic and international needs of Canada, assessed by a point system.
  • Terry Fox

    Terry Fox
    On this date Terry Fox had died. In 1980 he had one of his legs amputated from cancer.This then had encouraged him to do a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research. He made it half way across Canada when the spread of his cancer forced him to stop. He ran for 143 days straight in any kind of weather and 5,373 kilometres. Now the annual Terry Fox walk or run first held in 1981, has been raised over $500 million in his name towards cancer research.
  • Wayne Gretzky retires from hockey

    Wayne Gretzky retires from hockey
    Wayne Douglas Gretzky was a proffesional ice hockey player, and a former coach. HE played for the NHL from 1979-1999. Playing for the NHL had landed him the nickename The Great One. He is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season. After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
