Canada at the Turn of the Century- Settling the West
At the turn of the century Canada had wanted to start settling the prairies. Clifford Sifton, the Minister of the Interior, was in charge of getting people to immigrate over to Canada. Their ideal immigrant was a person who was strong, healthy and had experience in farming, Sifton and his agents advertised the prairies in Britain,Europe and the United States describing the opportunities available there. Eventually the advertising worked and lots of immigrants were moved to the Canadian West. -
Immediate cause of World War One
The immediate cause to world war one was the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdanand and Archduchess Sophia, These two were to be the emperors of Austria-Hungary. The reason for their deaths was because Serbia, apart of Austrian-Hungary, didn't like being under Austrian-Hungary control. The terrorist group the Black Hand had planned for the murder of the Archduke and Archduchess so that Serbia wouldn't be under their rule. By killing them, Serbia had made matters worse for themselves and the world. -
The Battle of Vimy Ridge
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a very important victory for Canada. This battle had beent the first time that Canada had attacked as a national unit, not as part of the British forces. Canada had also used a different tactic in the battle. They had decided to band the artillery and the infantry together, so that the Germans wouldn't have time to get from their trenches to their machine guns, By doing this they were able to take more Germans out and advance more quickly. -
The role of Women
During the war time womens roles had changed. Many women were sent overseas to work as nurses, ambulance drivers and workers in clubs. But at home women were responsible for replacing the jobs of the men who had went to war. Women had begun to realize their potential to fill other rolls and became for vocal about what rights they should have. At the end of the war the women who had job in factories were expected to give their jobs to the returning soldiers. Many women weren't pleased with this. -
Treaty of Versailles
After the war was over Britain. France, Italy and the United States met in Paris to determine the peace treaty. Canada was also given a seat for the meeting.During the meeting for the peace treaty, France had wanted to adopt President Wilson's Fourteen Points system. This system would make Germany so weak that they wouldn't be able to start another war. It was determined that the Fourteen Points system be used for the treaty. -
Prohibition
Prohibition was a law that banned the making,selling, and drinking of alcohol.This law was brought into place the the Women"s Christian Temperance Union, they believed that alcohol was the root of all evil it was also introduced to stop crime and violence induced by alcohol.This law didn't go over well with citizens, so it created more crime such as rum-running and bootlegged alcohol.This law didn't last very long in Canada but it did last a while in the United States. -
Women and the Persons Case
Judge Emily Murphy had her right to be a judged challenged by a man who believed that women were not considered a person in the eyes of the law.So Judge Emily along with Nellie McClung,Louise McKinney,Henrietta Edwards and Irene Parlby,petitioned the Prime Minister of Canada about if the word "person" extended to males and females. The Supreme Court of Canada said that it didnt.So they took t to the Privy Council of Britain, and there it determined that the word meant both males and females. -
Stock Market Crash
The day that the stock market crashed in North America is known as "Black Tuesday". There are a number of reasons why the stock market had crashed and those reasons are: businesses over expanded and over produced,Canada depended on their few primary products,Canada depended to much on the United States,high tariffs had chocked off international trade,and there was too much credit buying. Credit buying generally ment that more money was going into the economy but not enough coming out. -
Relief Camps
During the great depression the Canadian government had set up relief camps for single men to go to. In these relief camps they had cabins for the men to stay in,but they weren't very big there wasn't a lot of room to move around.The men were given food, shelter, clothing and 20cents a day in exchange for the work that they did.The jobs that the men had to do consisted of:building bridges and roads,draining swamps,cutting trees and digging ditches.Most of the men living there resented it. -
Start of World War II
World War II had started when Germany invaded Poland. Germany had invaed Poland on fake pretext that Poland had launched attacks on German territory.Itay had proposed a armistice and peace peace conference that Germany and France agreed to, but Britain said that an armistice was insufficient. On september third France, Britain and the independent dominions of the British Common Wealth declared war on Germany. -
Japanese Internment Camps in Canada
After the attacks on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese, Canada went into the war against Japan. This lead to the Japanese internment camps.Japanese Canadaian were forced to register their ancestry with the RCMP and many of their rights were taken away as a "precaution".In the camps their actions were monitored, their rights were suspended,and their freedom was removed.The internment camps were old lumber and mining sites.It wasn't until 1988 that the government issued a formal apology to the Japanes -
The Holocaust
The Holocaust is what's known as Hitlers "final solution". Hitler's plan was to eliminate the 11 million Jews in Europe.His wasys of killing them included: making them work until they either died or they weren't able to work,he would send them to extermination camps and concentration camps.There were also places called ghettos, it was a segregated part of town for the Jewish population.Hitler never did succeed in killing all the Jewish people in Europe, but he did kill 64% of it. -
D-day
D-day took place in Normandy France and it was the day the Allied forces started to take back the land that Germany had invaded and occupied.They seperated Normandy into five beaches and they were named:Sword,Juno,Gold,Omaha and Utah.The United States landed on Omaha and Utah beach. Britain landed on Sword and Gold beach,and on Juno beach along with 2nd and 3rd Canadian divisions.There were more than 30,00 Canadians involved with the invasion.D-day was considered a complete success, -
The Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis was when Egypt decided to take over the Suez Canal.The Suez Canal was an essential shipping lane in British and French control.After Egypt had decided to take over the canal, Britain, France and Isreal attacked Egypt. The Soviets had threatened to launch rocket attacks on Britain from the Egypt side.If the Soviets had done this it wold of forced the United States to step in and join the British,France and Isreal side. All these countries agreed to a ceasefire. -
Quiet Revolution
The Quiet Revolution was led by Premier Jean Lesage. The revolution was mainly about the French -Canadians having more control inside Quebec. The French-Canadians were upset that English speaking Canadians in Quebec had better jobs,educations and health benefits. So Lesage, Diefenbaker and Pearson helped out the Quebec Francophones with getting better health and education benefits and with being employed.This made things better for the Francohpones because they felt equal with the Anglaphones. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile crisis was the closest the world has come to nuclear war.The Soviets had put offensive nuclear missiles in Cuba that were aimed at the USA. The United States had found the missile installations and demanded that all them be removed and that if any missile strick were to happen it would constitute and act of war. A lot of tension had built up when a US spy plane was shot at during a mission over Cuba. There were days of negotiation about the missiles,the Soviets removed them. -
Canada gets a new flag
By the 1960's the debate for an official Canadian flag had intensified..When Lester B.Pearson had become Prime Minister he had decided to select a flag through parlamentary debate.PM Pearson prefered the flag to have blue borders with three joined maple leaves on a white background.But Diefenbaker had opposed this design for the flag. Instead they made the national flag have red borders with one red maple leave in the centre with a white background. -
Summit Series
The Summit Series was a series of hockey games played by Canada's best hockey players agains Russia's best hockey players.The first four games were played in Canada and the last four games were played in Moscow Russia. While the Russians were in Canada they won two games, lost one and tied one, putting themselves in the lead.Over in Russia the Canadian team had lost the first game but won the last three. Canada had won the series with four wins,and Russia had lost with three wins. -
Terry Fox - Marathon of Hope
Terry Fox was a cancer patient who had to have his leg amputated because of the cancer. He had decided that he was going to run a marathon from Newfoundland to British Columbia to raise money for cancer research. He had called this marathon "The Marathon of Hope". He started it on April,12,1980 at the Atlantic Ocean. Terry would run the equivalent of a mile per day.Unfortunately Terry Fox didn't complete the marathon due to his cancer.He died on June,28,1981. -
Ottawa Senators first Hockey game
The first game the Ottawa Senators ever played was against the Montreal Canadiens. The Senators ended up winning that game 5-3. After this victory the team didn't do so well. They only had ten wins, with seventy losses and four ties. The Senators had purposly aimed low and considered their first season a small success. The reason for them aiming low was for their long term plan of finishing low in standards for their first few years to secure high draft picks in the future.
