ASSASSINATION OF ARCHDUKE
In Sarajevo, the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbian group of nationalists. This ultimately pushed the Austria-Hungary against Serbia. -
THE ULTIMATUM
Austria sends Serbia an ultimatum to stop the upcoming conflict. To avoid the war, Serbia would have to end anti-Austrian agitation and bring to justice any Serbian involved in the assassination. The partial refusal by Serbia lead to Austria declaring war on Serbia. -
RUSSIA MOBILIZES
Russia backs it's ally Serbia by preparing forces for war. This example leads to more countries entering the war to support their allies. -
GERMANY INVADES BELGIUM
The strategic Schlieffen Plan of Germany leads them to enter Nneutral Belgium. Enraged by this violation to a neutral state, Britain joins the war. -

U-BOAT IS INTRODUCED
The German SM U-21 sinks the British HMS Pathfinder. This marks the beginning usage of the German terror brought upon many ships, mainly merchant, for blockades and sabotage purposes. -
POISON GAS
The first large scale use of Tear Gas by Germany on Russia. Though a failure due to freezing temperatures, it showed the intent of the Germans to use the lethal weapon against its enemies. -
LUSITANIA
A German U-Boat sinks the British Lusitania. The shipped 1,900 passengers, 120 being Americans. The sinking of the ship helped turn public opinion against Germany, and would help lead the US into war. -
FIRST TANK
The first model of a tank was created. These machines would see their first action in WWI, but as they were new, they were unreliable. Though new, they were key to the fact that it ended the stalemates of trench warfare. -
SUBMARINES RE-ENTER
The Germans recently restricted their use of the U-Boats after being pressured by President Wilson, but on this date, the restricted use ended. The germans resumed unrestricted warfare, angering the Americans even more. -
ZIMMERMAN TELEGRAM
Teaching With Documents: The Zimmerman Telegram The British intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico that stated that Germany would help Mexico regain land in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. They handed this message over to the US. This enraged the US even more, and public opinion once again, moved closer to entering war. -
RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
Due to a low morale, a failing economy, and a lack of faith in the government, the peopl eof Russia revolt. The revolution sets up a new government, but another large effect was the Triple Entente loses a great ally. -
US ENTERS WAR
After years of war, President Wilson, Congress, and the people decide its time to join in. The Triple Entente grew one member. This would boost morale of the troops, and add a fresh supply of them. -
FOURTEEN POINTS
President Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points President Wilson's Fourteen Points attempt to give moral reason for the US joining the war, and avoid tension between European Countires. This speech for future peace included freedom of the seas, free trade, reduction of arms, and an end to secret treaties. -
ARMISTICE
History of Veteranas Day The new German government sought an agreement to cease fighting. The conflict finally comes to an end. Later years this day becomes a holiday and is also known as Veteran's Day. -
TREATY OF VERSAILLES
Thought the nations agreed on Armisitce, the actual end happened on this date when all the nations singed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the war.
