  • Creation of French Indochina

    Creation of French Indochina
    French Indochina was created when France invaded Vietnam and created a colonial system which included, Tonkin Annam, Cochin China, Cambodia and Laos, which was added in 1893.
  • North Vietnam Independence

    Ho Chi Minh and the Vietminh declare independence in North Vietnam. His declaration followed that of the United States in an unsuccessful attempt to gain an alliance with the U.S.
  • Start of French Indochina War

    Ho Chi Minh rejects the French proposal for limited self government in North Vietnam. This sparked the start of the French Indochina War.
  • Truman Doctrine

    In a speech given to Congress, President Truman stated the foreign policy of the U.S. is to help any country threatened by communism. This Policy became know as the Truman Doctorine
  • Truman's Domino Theory

    Truman's Domino Theory
    Due to French defeat and Vietminh victory, Truman develops his Domino Theory where he explains his belief that other countries will fall to communism n the same way dominoes fall one after another.
  • End of Indochina War

    End of Indochina War
    Vietminh capture French base the French base at Dien Bien Phu where there were may casualties. This lead to the end of French rule and later the end of the Indochina War.
  • Division of North and South Vietnam

    Division of North and South Vietnam
    A gathering of many countries called the Geneva conference. At the conference the Geneva Acords divided Vietnam and the 17th parallel, making North Vietnam communist and South Vietnam a democratic country.
  • Creation of NLF (aka Vietcong)

    Creation of NLF (aka Vietcong)
    The National Liberation Front is created with North Vietnam backing up the political wing for the anti-government insurgency South Vietnam. The US sees the NLF as and army of North Vietnam and starts calling them the Vietcong which is short for Vietnam communists
  • Ngo Dinh Diem' Death

    The US sends backup to a South Vietnam military coup against Ngo Dinh Diem. This resulted in the brutal death of Diem and his brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu.
  • North Vietnam Attacks U.S. Destroyers

    U.S. destroyers Maddox an Turner Joy are allegedly attacked by torpedoes sent from North Vietnam. This possible attack leads to LBJ submitting the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution to Congress. The submission leads to U.S counter attacks.
