  • King Charles establishes Carolina

    King Charles II of England created the Carolina colony, giving it to the Lords Proprietors who were powerful English men. The land includes what is today North and South Carolina as well as parts of Georgia and Florida.
  • Culpeper’s Rebellion

    Culpeper’s Rebellion was led by John Culpeper, an Albemarle settler, against the Lords Proprietors because of the British Navigation Acts. The settlers did not want to pay customs duties on colonial goods.
  • Founding of Bath

    Bath was North Carolina’s first town. It was founded by European settlers near the Pamlico River.
  • Founding of New Bern

    New Bern, NC was named after Bern, Switzerland, and was home to German and Swiss refugees.
  • Tuscarora War

    The Tuscarora Indians killed hundreds of colonists in the Pamlico settlements. They were angry with the white men for taking their land and planting fields over their need to hunt.
  • NC becomes a royal colony

    North Carolina went from being a proprietary colony to being a royal colony that belonged directly to the king of England.
  • Albemarle boycotts the Assembly

    Albemarle boycotted the General Assembly because Cape Fear demanded equal representation.
  • Governor Dobbs appointed

    Arthur Dobbs became the governor because the colony was in serious trouble due to financial problems and the settlement being moved closer to Cherokee lands.
  • Governor Tryon appointed

    William Tryon became the new governor and wanted to improve North Carolina. He wanted the colony to be better organized and for the colonists to be more respectful of government officials.
  • State capital moved to New Bern

    Governor Tryon convinced the General Assembly to have a permanent seat in New Bern.
  • Regulators organize

    Backcountry residents were angry that Governor Tryon had not stopped bad government. Hundreds of taxpayers signed petitions for regulation.
  • Battle of Alamance

    The Regulators fought the Battle of Alamance against Governor Tryon and the militia, but they lost.
