1600's
Stagecoach routes were established in the United States in the 1600s. Inns where travelers ate and slept soon developed all along these routes. -
1794
The first building designed specifically as a hotel was probably New York City’s City Hotel. This five story hotel was built in 1794. Guests paid two dollars (which was a lot of money in 1794) to stay in one of the hotel’s 73 rooms. -
1800's
During the 1800s, railroad travel developed and spread. Travel by railroad was much more comfortable than stagecoach travel had been. Trains also greatly decreased the length of travel time. For example, a 110-mile trip had taken a long 11 hours by stagecoach. Now the same trip took only two and a half hours by train. Travel over long distances became possible for more people. Inns, saloons, and restaurants were built close to the railway stations. -
1828
It was during this railroad boom that the first grand hotel was built in America. A grand hotel offers luxury accommodations. The Tremont House in Boston was constructed in 1828. At the same time, a new hospitality profession began: hotelier. It was a grand hotel. -
1898
In 1898, Ritz built the world-famous Ritz Hotel in Paris. He was the first hotelier to give each guest room a private bath, built-in closets, and telephones. -
1900's
In the early 1900s, Ellsworth Statler developed his chain of Statler hotels. Statler was the first to develop uniform standards for hotels. His hotels featured telephones in every room, modern plumbing, full-size closets with lights, radios, and free morning newspapers. He also developed a list of service rules, called The Statler Service Code. Each employee had to memorize the code and follow it. -
1952
In 1952, a Memphis businessman named Kemmons Wilson took his family on a vacation to Washington, D.C. He was disappointed by the shortage of accommodations to meet his family’s needs.Wilson developed the Holiday Inn,Holiday Inn was designed as a roadside motel that had extra amenities to meet the needs of traveling families. -
1958
Hospitality choices grew again when commercial jets began operating in 1958 Airports became the new center for hotel, motel, and restaurant development. New vacation areas were developed in locations that were easily accessible by air. Jet airline service also decreased the time and inconvenience of international travel. -

The United States has made great contributions to the hospitality industry. Grand hotels, motels, restaurant chains, fast-food businesses, and franchises all originated in the United States.
