A Civil War between the Communist and Nationalists in China. The United States supported the Nationalists and Jiang Jieshi. The Communists were lead by Mao Zedong. -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under allied control. The Soviet Union wanted the Western Aliies to withdraw Deutschmark from West Berlin. -
Berlin Airlift
The United States and their Western allies airlifted supplies to help the starving and cold citizens devastated by the war. American planes provided supplies for over a year and the 200,000 planes delivered more than one and a half million tons of supplies. -
Formation of NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded in response to the threat posed by the Soviet Union. The members agreed that an armed attack against any one of them in Europe or North America would be considered an attack against them all. -
National Security Council Report NSC-68
The report written by the National Security Council was a 58 page report on top secret information during the Cold War. It was whether or not to increase the pressue on the containment against communism. -
Korean War
The Korean War was between North and South Korea. North Korea was communism and was suported by the Soviet Union. South Korea was dimplomatic and was supported by the United States. -
President Truman fires General MacArthur
General McArthur wasnt against President Trumans views on how they should approach the war. President Truman wanted to keep the war contained but McArthur wanted to expand it into to China. President Truman fired General McArthur in order to insure the safety of the United States. -
Formation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty among eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War. Mainly in response to the formation of NATO by the democratic countries. -
Launching of Sputnik
The Soviet Union launched the first successful artifical satellite. It weighed only 183 ounds ad was the size of a beach ball. This launch also led directly into the United States creating NASA. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union had nuclear missles in Cuba. President Kennedy notified Americans about the missiles and explained his decision to put a naval blockade around Cuba. He also made it clear the U.S. was prepared to use military force if necessary to neutralize this perceived threat to national security.
