Passed in fear of people, mainly communists and anarchists, overthrowing the government or revolting, the Smith Act banned advocating the overthrow of the government and was used to persecute communist leaders. The act was upheld in 1951 by Dennis et. al. v. US I know it isn't in the time-frame, but it was too important to leave out -

McCarran Internal Security Act
Although initially vetoed by President Truman, the McCarran Internal Security Act (MICA) required all communist, socialist, and fascist organisations to register with the US government. The act further allowed for the restriction of international travel and immigration of the members of these organisations and prevented them from gaining citizenship. -
The Rosenbergs!
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were tried, convicted, and executed for spying for the soviet union. The exact evidence of their spying and the extent to which each was involved is still debated to this day, even in light of the declassification of most then secret records. -
22nd Ammendment
This amendment to the constitution banned presidents from serving more than 2 terms. This was passed in response to FDR's 4 terms in office, only stopped by his death in office. -
Denis et al. VS. United States
Eugene Dennis and his compatriots, leaders of the US communist party, were tried for violations of the Smith Act which banned violent overthrow of the government. Dennis et. al. were accused of encouraging violent uprising against the government and tried. The Smith Act and persecution of communist leaders in the US was an effect of the Red Scare. -
