  • First infant school founded

    Jonathan Friedrick Oberlin, An Alsatian Luthern Pastor in Waldersbach, Bavaria, founded Salle d'Asile "hall of refuge" or infant school. It was created to care for and teach young children while thier parents worked in the fields.

  • Infant school opened in Scotland

    Robert Owen opened an infant school in New Lanark, Scotland. It was creadted to provide care for the children of the parents who worked in his cotton mills.

    Margaretha Schurz, a native of Hamburg, Germany, established the first kindergarten in Watertown, WI. Originally, the school was opened, for the children of German immigrants, in the Schurt home.
