Johan Amos Comenius speaks out his belief of how children learn through play. He wrote the first children's illustrated book titled "The World Illustrated." -
First Preschool
Johann Pestalozzi establishes what would become know as the first school to teach preschool aged children. He also advocated for education of the poor. He worked to provide methods of teaching that were expected to help children in strengthen abilities. -
Hull House
Hull House was a settlement founded by Jane Addams that was to provide nursery care for the children of immigrants that were new to the country and seeking work. The school was located in Chicago, Illinois it first began as a place for story telling and community gathering. It would eventually grow to add a kindergarten, a boys club during the summer months and taught the older girls how to sew and cook. -
Head Start
A program know as Head Start is funded by the Economics Opportunity Act. Head start is a federal program that offers early education to families with a low income. The idea behind the project was to ensure that every child no matter where they come from would have access to an early education and help to prepare for school. -
NAEYC
National Academy of Early Childhood Programs is established by the NAEYC for voluntary accreditation. The Organization had developed a code of ethics to be shared amongst early childhood educators, as a way to ensure their safety and the safety of the children in their care. The idea for putting this into writing was the concept had always been there but they wanted a way to be able to back teachers with a written document. -
SIDS Scare
Campaign was launched to avoid SIDS in child care settings. The risk had reached a point where something needed to be done so it was mandated that all infant rooms practice the safe sleep method where every child was slept on their and if they need to be swaddle a physicians statement would be needed. No child is to be left in a chair to sleep or in any other position then on their back in a crib and if they fall asleep in a different position they are to be moved within 15 minutes. -
Military Support
Operation Military Child Care is enacted to support the needs of families who are active duty or deployed. This initiative is sponsored by the Department of Defense (DOD). The idea behind the program was to support the families who will need more access to child care during the times when they are deployed and the expenses will increase due to this. -
Preschool for All
President Obama called on congress to expand access to high quality preschool to every child in America. It was called “The Preschool for all Initiative Act”. He wanted to expand on the already promising program Head Start to give access to thousands more children. Studies have shown that if by 3rd grade children are not reading at their grade level they are six times less likely to graduate. He wanted every family to be able to provide for their children.
