    In 1658, what is considered the first picture book for children was published. This book was called, "Orbis Pictus" and was written by John Comenius. Comenius believed that children learn through senses and that starting education early on was essential.

    Johann Pestalozzi wrote a book called, "How Gertrude Teaches her Children" Johann believed that mothers were best suited to teach their children. This book promoted that idea and was the fore runner for most "how-to" parenting books you find today.

    In 1840, Friedrich Fröbel coined the word, "Kindergarten" meaning "garden for children". He believed that children learned through play. He created Fröbel's Gifts which were objects that the children used to learn concepts such as shapes and sizes.

    In the early 1920's, John Piaget introduced his theory of cognitive development. This theory consisted of four stages; sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and formal operational stage. These stages are what we base the current "Ages and Stages" standards.
