First Fleet arrives in Australia
People from Britain begin a convict colony at Port Jackson. 30% of the 756 convicts on the First Fleet were baptised. Half of the 30% were Irish. All convicts had to go to the Anglican church on Sunday. If they refused they got lashes. -
Catholic settlers petition the Governor
The Governor (Philip) refused to let in a priest otherwise he thought the Irish catholics would rebel. He wanted everyone to be his religon. EXTRA FACT: The Irish catholics burnt down the first Anglican Church. -
Catholics in Australia
Early catholics could not do their own traditions so they had to keep up their faith by doing their traditional prayers and gathering together on Sunday to do their catholic traditions and prayers such as the Rosary. They used prayer beads and prayer books as well. If catholics had children and wanted them to be baptised they would have to do it themselves because there would be no priests around to do it. -
The first priests
The first two convict priests arrive in 1800 and were caught up in the Irish rebellion. Even though there were priests they were still not allowed to celebrate a mass. Governor King allowed Fr Dixon to conduct a school because he was a trusted member of the 'middle class'. -
First mass allowed to be celebrated
The first official catholic mass was celebrated on the 15th of may 1903. Police made sure the Irish did not rebel by watching everyone. -
First free priest arrives
During the time that Father O' Fylnn was not a convict he was a priest. He was not allowed by England but the Pope sent him. One year later he was banished and was not allowed to come back. -
First official Catholic Priests arrive
The first priest,Fathers Connoly and Therry, were appointed and were the first official priests. -
Catholics in New South Wales
Towards the 1820's, most catholics in the colony were still convicts or ex-convicts. But at this time they still had to go to the Anglican church on Sunday's. -
Emancipation Act in England
This Act meant catholics now had the rights to hold Government positions. -
First Catholic Officials arrive in Australia
When the Emancipaton Act was made it allowed catholics to hold Government positions. Just one year later, two catholics were appointed to the Government in Australia. -
Bishop Polding appointed
Since Australia's catholics had a population of 20,000 Catholics and were rising like never before, Australia introduced it's first Bishop. His name was Bishop Polding. In this year St Mary's Cathedral was built. -
Church Act
Now every religion could be equal and no religion is better than another. -
Caroline Chisolm
Caroline Chisholm was a very respected catholic women in the colony because she was one of the five sisters of charity. She received an award for her work with women and emigrants. -
White settlers kill a group of aboriginals
Polding was against the aboriginals. A massacre of aboriginals happened at Myall creek. Europeans also devastated the native animals along with aboriginals. They did not care about their environment either. -
Polding appointed Archbishop
The colony has started to overflow with 101,904 settlers with 21,298 of them being catholics. As a result, Polding becomes the Archbishop of Australia. This year it is the official year that transportation ends permanently. -
