Louisiana Purchase
Video: Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory from Napoleon for 4 cents and acre, or $15 million for the whole thing. This doubled the size of America. -
War of 1812
The War of 1812 was brought on by the British harassing the Americans by impressment of sailors and arming of American Indians. The US won the war. -
Missouri Compromise
There were 11 free states and 11 slave states when Missouri wanted to become a (slave) state. This would upset the balance of power in Congress between free & slave states, so this compromise was reached. Missouri was admitted as a slave state, and Maine as a free state. A line was drawn through the Louisiana territory- below it would be slave, and above it would be free. -
Texas annexed
Texas had gained independence from Mexico in 1836. It was annexed by the US in 1845. -

Mexican Cession
The treaty ending the Mexican American war ceded more territory to the US: California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, & Wyoming. The US paid $15 million for the territory. -
