Origin
No one knows where drifting came from, but it was first seen in Japan in the 1970's and became a very popular culture between car people. One of the orignal drivers who became famous for this is Kunimitsu Takahashi. -
First drifting event!
In 1988 the first drifting event was orgnized by Option magazine founder Daijiro Inada. He helped orgnize the first event specifically for drifting called the D1 Grand Prix. -
First event out of Japan
One of the first events to be held out of Japan was at Willow Springs Raceway in California. It was also hosted by the Japanese drifting magazine and organization Option. -
Popular cars in events
To drift you must have a rear-wheel drive car. There are a couple cars that are really popular within the drifting events. Some cars are, Nissan Silvia S15, Nissan Silvia S13, Mazda RX7, Nissan 350z and Nissan Skyline R34. There are many more cars but these are ones that stand out most. -
Formula D comes to America
Formula D was founded by Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage in 2003. It became a sport in America and the popularity went crazy. To this day Formula D host one of the biggest events for drifting. -
Need for Speed: Underground 2
Drifting became very popular with the racing games. One franchise from EA started to release "Need For Speed" titles to game consoles. Need for Speed: Underground 2 took new heights with drifting in video games and everyone still says it is one of the best games to this day. -
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
One of the Fast and the Furious movies was based only drifting. This opened up a lot of peoples eyes to something they may have never heard of or seen before. This movie was also based in Japan.
