The history of the wedding dress

  • Middle ages

    Wedding back then where more for politics then love,this was mostly between high class family's. The bride would commonly wear, bold colors and layers of fur,velvet and silk, this would represent the wealth of the family.

    The poor families that couldn't afford Expensive clothes, wore their best church dress to their weddings.
  • 1406.

    Philippa of England, who wore a tunic made out of white silk that was bordered with ermine and squirrel, was the first documented instance of royalty wearing white on their weddings.
  • 1920

    Even after white becoming a popular for a wedding dress, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of saxe-coburg. Wedding dresses would be short in the front and longer in the back.

    Nowadays people assumed that the white dress symbolized purity or virginity, but back then it was the color blue.
  • Eastern culture

    In country's like china and India, wedding dresses would be red, which symbolizes good luck and auspiciousness. the dress would usually be made of silk, crepe, Georgette, chartreuse, or satin. They would also use other colors like gold, pink, orange,maroon,brown,and yellow.

    The iconic white dress was made popular by queen Victoria. This was popular in western civilization, rather then the Eastern civilization which preferred to use red, which symbolized auspiciousness.
