    Cyborg Manifesto

In 1985, Donna Haraway wrote the "Cyborg Manifesto". In it, Haraway describes the patriarchal, masculine hold, that seems to dominate every aspect of daily life.
Her paper described gender relationships, and used the terminology "cyborg" as metaphor for the practices that formed the basis for current gender relationships brought on by western traditions.
  • Cyborg Manifesto Pt. 2

"The Cyborg Manifesto" goes into detail about the autonomy of the cyborg. It has only the imperative it's been given, and nothing more. This is a comparison to the subjugation of women by western traditions. She goes onto compare man (humans) to other living things, but more specifically to animals.
  • Cyborg Manifesto Criticisms

The point of the paper wasn't just to highlight those differences. It also was a call to arms for woman to step out of the shadow of the patriarch however; the paper was also met with a lot of criticism. It's been interpreted different ways, and not as surprisingly, as a post-gender statement, which it is not. The manifesto simply highlights the need to separate one self from gender as a form of identity, by using cyborgs to explaining the relationship between man and machine.
  • Cyborg Manifesto & Reality

Another harsh criticism of Haraway's Manifesto, is it highlights the gender norms but does not give a unifying vision of femininity. Additionally, and more recently, another criticism has stated that the cyborg is no longer a worthy construct for analysis. Major technological advancement has occurred since the release of the original paper, to include the internet. The imagined cyborg may be a completely different being now rather than an autonomous construct incapable of the human experience.
