Women in Argentina Protest Rape and Death of Girl, 16, With #MiercolesNegro Walkout
Women in Argentina walked out of their jobs to protest femicide: violence against women. This took place after a 16 year old girl was raped and killed, along with 19 other women being murdered. The protests was known as #MiercolesNegro on social media (Black Wednesday), and was organized by the group Una Menos (Not One Less) Twitter was the leading platform for this protest. -
Russians Protest Corruption in Russia
Alexei Navalny used YouTube to announce this protest 12 days prior to the event. Coordinated anti-corruption protests popped up across the country drawing thousands. In the YouTube video, Navalny accused Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of corrupt accumulation of wealth, and demanded an investigation. -
National School Walkout
Thousands of students walked out of school in Florida, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Santa Monica, Columbine High, and in Newtown Conn. Many more cities reported walkouts. This walkout was coordinated through Snapchat and Twitter, and other social media outlets to coordinate a gun control protest. -
Climate Change Protest
Jack Harris urged his YouTube followers totaling 4 million to protest environmental destruction. A week of events was planned in London by the Extinction Rebellion group to bring the city to a standstill. -
Storm the Capitol
A violent mob stormed the capitol seeking to keep Trump in office. Many fingers have pointed to the right and left, and conspiracy theories have come to light. It is clear however, that the riot was fueled by social media.
