Trump has been using social media for awhile, but everything has been recently brought into light since his presidency. This is more of a continuous event as he is constantly posting on social media, many times outraging the public. -
Fake News
Related to politics, specifically Trump again, as the idea of Fake News, although not new, went viral. The worry was of social media spreading false narratives and stories about politics. People believed it was up to platforms to filter out the false news. -
#MeToo Movement
In October of 2017, a viral hashtag, #MeToo, began to spread viral. It essentially entailed of stories of women who had been sexually assaulted, taken advantage of, or abused. It became really well-known in the entertainment industry, with the film-tycoon Harvey Weinstein being accused by dozens of women of sexual assault. It's a similar story to Bill Cosby. -
2020 Presidential Candidates
More than ever, presidential candidates are becoming more and more involved with social media. Instagram is no longer for the youth: Bernie Sanders, at 78 years old, is as active, or more, than the youth. Trump posts multiple times a day about what is going on in the White House. AOC, Elizabeth Warren, and other political figures are very involved in social media.
