Tactics: One tactic I remember was the use of a black square as an Instagram photo in 2020. It was used as a way to show solidarity with the African American community. Social media was also used to show support in other ways and to organize protests and civil unrest in many cities across America. -
Hong Kong Protests
Time: 2014-present
Conflict: Started from the opposition of a new extradition law and went on to be a battle for democracy and freedom from the Chinese government.
Social Media: Facebook
Tactics: Social Media was used to organize protests and riots. It was also used to tell in real time where Chinese forces were. It was also used for anonymity for protests organizers. -
#MeToo
Time: 2017-present
Conflict: The Harvey Weinstein controversy was the catalyst and it turned into a fight for women's right to their bodies.
Social Media: Twitter
Tactics: Social media was used to tell stories about women's, and men's, experiences with rape and sexual assault, which lead to people being arrested. -
Covid-19 Protests
Time: Mar 2020-present
Conflict: A belief that government was overstepping its authority by having mandatory lockdowns and business closures.
Social Media: Facebook, Twitter
Tactics: It has been used to disseminate information, true or false, about the pandemic and vaccines. One specific example is the use of social media to fuel a recall election for the governor of California. It has also been used to organize protests. -
Gamestop
Time: Jan 2021-present
Conflict: Wall Street shorting Gamestop and AMC stock, which lead to a push against the status quo of Wall Street.
Social Media: Reddit
Tactics: Used to organize when to buy Gaemstop stocks as well as to just organize people to just buy Gamestop stock. Was made possible by Robinhood.
