Chinese Traders
In 1432 Zheng Hemay came to a Australia.The Chiness Traders began sailing in the area around 400AD. They were heading to the spice island to trade there ships may have sailed into the waters north of Australia.The Aborigines told stories about people with golden skin. This could have meant the Makassans. -

Portuguese
There is no evidence to prove that the portuguese made it to Australia,but portuguese maps show the rocks and reef of the great barrier reef. -
Spanish Exploration
In 1606 Pedro Fernandez de Quiros & Luis Vaez de Torris were trying to discover Australia.They came in a fleet of 3. They got to Vanuatu and stopped. People believe there was a mutiny on bourd. Quiros went back to Peru. He took 1 ship with him. -
SPANISH EXPLORATION
In1606 Quiros andTorris led three spanish ships on an expedition from peru,in south america to find the great south land.Quiros who was in command,then had to decide whether to continue to explore the area or return to mexico.He chose mexico, ending any chance he had of becoming the first european to find Australia.Some people belive that there was mutiny on board the ship and his crow made him head for mexico. -
Willem Janzoon
He sailed in a ship called Duyfken(little dove). He sailed from Batavia to New Guinea.He was searching for gold for a Dutch company (V.O.C). He reported that the country was full of savage,cruel,black barbarians who slew some of his sailors. He was the first European to land on Australian soil.(Cape York Peninsular) -
DIRK HARTOG
In October 1616 the ship Eendracht,captain by Dirk Hartog,was the second dutch vessal to land on the containent (the Duyken was first). Hartog, a Dutch sea captain, was on his way to Batavia (now Jakarta) in Java and he arrived at the Great south land by accident.The Dutch called this land Eendrachtland,after Hartog's ship.The name was later changed to New Holland. -

Abel Tasman is a dutch explorer from holland.Tasmans 1st voyage.Tasman came from batavia in 2 ships called Zeehaen and Heemskerck.He came to map new holland.He maped Tasmaia van diemans land discovered the island N.Z. Tasmans crow heard people in the bushand saw smoke from fires. -

Abel Tasmans 2nd voyage 1644 Abel Tasman was sent back to try to map all of new holland and to make contact with I.A. he could find a passage throuth the Torris strait to get to theeast coast. -
Makassan contact
In the 1650's Makassan's came to Australia in boats called Praus.The Praus could only hold 30 crew members.The Makassan's and Aborigines they traded cloth,tobacco,axes,knives,rice and gin.They came to fish for sea cucumber(trepang) so they could sell it to the chinese.They traded cloth,tobacco,knives,rice and gin.Most contact was peasful. -
William Dampier
In 1699 William Dampier commanded the navel ship Roebuck and sailed across the Indian Ocean to New Holland. He reached the west coast for a second time in August 1699, near the abrolhos islands.To navigate he used Abel Tasmans chart. Dampier sailed north into a bay teeming with sharks which he named sharks bay. While on shore getting water they caught kangaroo rats for food. He sailed further north to where broom is now, searching for water. -
James Cook
James Cook mapped the east coast of Australia. His voyage lasted from 1768-1771. He spent most of 1770 maping east coast. He sailed in a ship called the Endeavour to calculate the distance of venus from the sun (Tahiti) and to find signs of Terra Australis.Cook had both hostile and peaceful meetings with Indigenous Australians.
