Discontent Grows

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Formally ended the 7 years war. It prohibited colonists from settling west of the proclamation line.
  • Sugar act

    Passed to help raise money for war debts. Angered the colonists who used sugar to make rum, an important export of the colonies.
  • Currency Act

    Prohibited colonists from making their own currency, which didn't help the currency shortage.
  • Stamp Act

    Passed to raise money. It put a tax on all official documents and other mail. Made it nearly impossible for some businesses to continue business.
  • Quartering Act 1765

    Forced the locals to give food, water, transportation, and lodging to the local British Garrisons.
  • Declaratory Act

    Gave the British parliament legal jurisdiction over the American colonies, as it would the Mainland. This was met with protests of unfair taxation without representation.

    Townshend Act

    Taxes on certain imported goods, forcing some colonists to stop trading for imported British goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    British troops fired into a group of protesters killing 5. This angered the colonists severely as the protesters were unarmed.
  • Boston Tea Party

    A protest of the taxes on tea in which a group of colonists raided and destroyed an imported shipment of tea.
  • Intolerable Acts

    A series of acts passed to punish the colonists for the Boston tea party, leading to even more protests.
  • Quartering Act 1774

    An act that applied to all of the colonies was that the local royal governors could forcefully take homes and buildings for the use of British Garrisons.
  • Quebec Act 1774

    Set Quebec aside from the other American colonies. This protected Quebec from invasion by the revolutionary American forces. In a way was responsible for the creation of Canada.
